Derek’s passion for machinery started in childhood, working alongside his dad and building a deep appreciation for how things work. That spark turned into a career path in 2003, when he enrolled in a Precision Machining vocational class in high school, a course he loved so much he took it every semester from sophomore through senior year.
After high school, Derek worked at several machine shops before joining Molex. He sharpened his skills further at Pinellas Technical College, earning a 4-year journeyman Tool & Die Machining certification that accelerated his career and laid the foundation for what came next.
In 2019, Derek brought his Tool & Die background to Nelson Competition. Working closely under Kris Nelson, he helped design and build some of the shop’s most competitive race engines — contributing to wins in Pro 632, LDR, Pro275, and more.
At the end of 2024, Derek made his biggest move yet and purchased Nelson Competition’s machines and shop building, and launching Heavy Metal Engines with his wife in early 2025.
Today, Derek brings 20+ years of hands-on precision machining experience to every engine that leaves the shop.
